Quy tắc 1: Chủ ngữ là danh từ số ít hoặc không đếm được. 

VD: English is my favourite subject.

Quy tắc 2: Chủ ngữ là một cụm danh động từ hoặc một mệnh đề.

VD: Taking shower after 11PM does harm to your health. 

Quy tắc 3: Chủ ngữ là cụm từ chỉ thời gian, số tiền, khoảng cách, trọng lượng, độ dài.

VD: Three hours is the time for the IELTS Exam. 

Quy tắc 4: Chủ ngữ đi kèm với each, every.

VD: Each member in the team has their own strength and weakness.

Quy tắc 5: Chủ ngữ là đại từ bất định (everybody, everyone, everything, anybody, anyone, anything, no one, nobody, nothing).

VD: Everything has been good so far.

ĐỘNG TỪ CHIA Ở DẠNG SỐ NHIỀU KHI:

Quy tắc 1: Chủ ngữ là danh từ số nhiều.

VD: The English books are on the top shelf. 

Quy tắc 2: Chủ ngữ là danh từ đơn lẻ nhưng có dạng số nhiều như glasses, scissors, pants, trousers, pliers, ear-rings, v.v.

VD: My glasses are missing, I don't remember where I left it.

Quy tắc 3: Chủ ngữ là danh từ tập hợp được đại diện bởi tính từ.

VD: The young often make more mistakes than the older.

MỘT SỐ TRƯỜNG HỢP ĐẶC BIỆT:

Quy tắc 1: Chủ ngữ là một cụm từ thì phải tìm danh từ chính và chia động từ theo danh từ đó.

VD: The last three chapters in the book were excellently written. 

Quy tắc 2: Chủ là là danh từ tập hợp như group, family. class, team, army, council, v.v.

• Danh từ dùng như 1 đơn vị nhất quán → Động từ số ít.

VD: The family arrives together at the train station.

• Danh từ chỉ từng thành viên trong tập hợp → Động từ số nhiều. 

VD: My family love to travel together, we always go on holiday for Christmas.

• Police, military, cattle, poultry → Động từ số nhiều.

VD: The police are investigating the murder.  

• Furniture, luggage, information, traffic, knowledge → Động từ số ít.

VD: The furniture was more expensive than I thought it would.

Quy tắc 3: Chủ ngữ kép.

• CN1 + and + CN2 → Động từ số nhiều

VD: He and she go to Paris for honeymoon.

• CN1 + or + CN2 → Động từ chia theo CN2

VD: Has your brothers or your father ever taught you how to fix the light bulb?

• Cấu trúc Either CN1 + or + CN2/ Neither CN1 + nor + CN2/ Not only + CN1 + but also + CN2 → Động từ chia theo CN2

VD: Neither the students nor their teacher knows anything about the picnic plan.

• Chủ ngữ được liên kết bởi (cụm) giới từ (with, at, together, along with, as well as, included with, accompanied by, no less,than, in addition to, v.v.) → Động từ chia theo CN1.

VD: The students along with their teacher were going on picnic yesterday. 

Quy tắc 5: Một số cụm từ chỉ số lượng.

• A number of + Danh từ số nhiều → Động từ số nhiều.

VD: A number of students were rewarded for their excellent performance.

• The number of + Danh từ số nhiều → Động từ số ít.

VD: The number of traffic accidents has increased over the year.

• One of + Danh từ số nhiều → Động từ số ít.

VD: One of the students has an outstanding performance. 

• Phân số/Phần trăm + of + Danh từ → Động từ chia theo danh từ.

VD: Half of the tickets were sold.

VD: 50% of the money was lost.
